At the beginning of year 13, Carmen and I decided to do a work experience based in a care/residential home. As soon as we were welcomed by the Head of Activities, the residents and the staff, our stereotypical thoughts of a care home disappeared. We soon understood what this care home really meant to them – and to us – and that was truly awe inspiring.

Here we are with one of our favourite residents, Ilene, who gave us some inspirational words about life and the meaning behind it: “In life there are struggles, however they won’t last forever.” The motive behind what she said particularly inspired me as good things do not come easy, but can have amazing outcomes.  She also had a great sense of humour. We also met her husband, Peter, who was just as lovely as his wife.

Mr Hipwood was our main navigator throughout this journey.and he made our work experience very enjoyable with his bubbly personality and great sense of humour. He gave us an insight into how everything works and how the loving care home functions.

This was an experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone who is aspiring to work in healthcare or with the general public, as we have learnt so many transferable skills.
